Joseph L. Amprey, Jr., professor emeritus of Kutztown University, is a native of
Baltimore, Maryland. He retired from Kutztown in 2009. Dr. Amprey is a former
professor in the department of student support services, the International Students’
Advisor, and the director of the multicultural studies minor program at Kutztown
University, in Kutztown, PA. He was employed at Kutztown University for 21.years.
From 1988 until 2001, he was dean of Academic Services, and from 2001 until his
retirement, he was a professor.
He earned a B. A. at Morgan State University in Baltimore, an M.Ed. at The Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, an M.S. at the University of Baltimore, and a Ph.D. at
The American University in Washington, D.C.
For 36 years, he was a professor or university administrator. His fields of specialization
are human diversity, race relations, psychology, and international studies.
For three years, he was the editor of the Journal of the National Association of Student
Affairs Professionals, and for 11 years (1991-2002), he wrote a column on race relations
for the Reading Eagle /Times in Reading, Pennsylvania.
He is also the editor of the book, Student Development on the Small Campus and the
author of many papers for professional journals and other scholarly publications.
Since 200, he has been the publisher/editor of the DRUM, a newspaper (published 6 times
annually) which focuses on news and views affecting people of color in Berks County,
Pennsylvania.
Currently, he is an adjunct professor (of psychology) at Muhlenberg College in
Allentown, PA and Bowie State University (of sociology) in Bowie, MD.
